To whoever put these together, I applaud you.
I know that a lot of people will disagree with this, but I think Taylor is a horrible role model. Are the emotions in her songs easy to relate to? Yes. Who hasn’t been upset by a break up, or wanted someone who was dating another person?
However, she is irresponsible with her messages. This photoset proves it. For someone who supposedly supports the NOH8 campaign, these are pretty hypocritical lyrics. She is essentially saying that homosexuality is an insult, and an equal response to being called obsessive and crazy.
Personally, I would not ever be offended if someone thought I was gay, or said so to others. It’s not an insult. I would, however, be offended if someone called me obsessive and crazy. In this context, those are insulting words.
Yes, I know, this is just a silly song by a silly girl, but this is a real issue. As a public figure, and someone who rallies against bullying, she’s doing a pretty fantastic job of bullying here. And she should know better.
But Taylor Swift makes no apologies for the messages she sends to her fans, who are mainly young girls. Or at least, none that I’ve ever heard of.
The worst thing about all of this is that I don’t think she’s done it out of malice, or out of homophobia. I think she’s done it because she’s ignorant and she doesn’t think about what she says and what it means.
We don’t need ignorant girls running around singing about stealing girls’ boyfriends, glorifying a tragic story that ends in teenage suicide, and gay bashing, pretending to be strong female role models.
Yes!
